The Moon Competes with No One
August 29, 2026
About an unexpected early morning, a shadow that tried to take up far too much space, and a moon that seems to have no time for such nonsense
Good morning, my dearest life.
Good morning, my most faithful and sincere friend.
I have to tell you about something that happened this morning.
Well, actually, I should probably begin by telling you that I stepped out onto the balcony at five in the morning.
Again.
Yes.
Five oโclock.
It seems that lately my relationship with this particular hour is beginning to acquire some rather suspicious characteristics.
But I had a very specific mission: I wanted to say hello to the stars from afar once again.
After everything I had been thinking about them yesterday, I was looking forward to seeing them again.
So I opened the balcony door, lifted my head...
and there was the moon.
Ah!
The visit to the stars was over.
I am terribly sorry, my little ones, but that moon was making such a grand entrance that there was simply no way I could ignore her.
She was beautiful.
Truly beautiful.
So brilliantly illuminated that, for a few seconds, I completely forgot about everything else.
I stood there staring at her with the awestruck expression of a little girl who looks up and discovers a castle where, until that very moment, she had seen nothing but a hill, and decides that perhaps the world really does keep secrets for those who know how to imagine them.
And then I smiled at her.
Yes.
I smiled at the moon.
What else was I supposed to do?
It was the least I could do after finding such a magnificent spectacle waiting right outside my window.
And as I watched her, I began to notice the clouds.
There were several of them gathered around her.
Big ones.
Thick ones.
The kind that seem to have decided they have unfinished business with the sky and are going to stay there for as long as they please.
One of them drifted in front of the moon.
Then another followed.
And for a moment, they almost covered her completely.
But the moon was still there.
And I loved that.
Because even when I could no longer see her whole, her light kept slipping out from around the edges of the clouds.
Sometimes it was barely more than a faint glow.
Sometimes it was a silver patch cutting its way through the cloud.
And when the cloud grew thicker, the light seemed to spread around it even more softly.
I watched this for a while and thought:
Well, look at you.
What a curious way to keep shining.
The moon did not seem to be making any effort at all.
She wasn't pushing the clouds away with her hands.
She wasn't getting angry with them.
She wasn't shouting:
โMove along, ladies! I have a reputation to maintain!โ
Nothing of the sort.
The clouds did what clouds do.
The moon did what the moon does.
And the sky remained the sky.
And the longer I looked at her, the more I admired that extraordinary indifference to everything happening around her.
The moon did not seem terribly concerned about who was looking at her.
Or who wasn't.
Or who said she was beautiful.
Or who preferred the stars.
Or who dreamed of taking her place.
Or who might envy her light.
Or who judged her.
Not even about the person trying to sleep and thinking:
โPlease, Moon, turn the brightness down a little.โ
She wasn't going to turn anything down.
She would simply remain there.
Suspended.
Peaceful.
Magnificent.
As though she had much more important things to attend to.
And that was when I began thinking about how different we are.
Because we do care.
We care so very much.
We look at who is watching.
Who is applauding.
Who is criticizing.
Who is copying.
Who is comparing.
Who is doing something similar.
Who seems to be moving faster than we are.
Who is receiving more attention.
Who is occupying a place we wanted for ourselves.
And sometimes we waste an absurd amount of energy trying to figure out what someone else is thinking about us.
Meanwhile, the moon has been going around up there for billions of years without asking anyone for a performance review.
What a woman!
Honestly.
I think I like her more and more.
And yet, that morning, I needed exactly that.
Yesterday had ended with my heart feeling a little unsettled.
I had met some people whom I was genuinely very happy to see.
At first, everything was joy.
Conversation.
Time spent together.
That lovely feeling that comes with seeing people again.
But after I said goodbye and found myself alone, something else began creeping in.
I don't want to go into details.
And I don't want this letter to turn into a case file about anyone.
No.
There is something I have decided to guard very carefully within myself:
I don't want to talk about people when they are not there.
Not to put them on a pedestal, and not to tear them down.
Even if I am right.
Even if I think I could explain exactly what happened.
There are words that, once they leave us, can never be put back into our mouths.
And I want to learn to be careful with mine.
But I can tell you what happened inside me.
I felt a kind of shadow.
An unpleasant feeling of competition.
As though someone wanted to push me a little to the side of the road and try on my dress.
As though there were a need to prove that the things I do, the things that make me who I am, the things I have built with care and love, could be done too.
And perhaps even better.
That hurt me.
Especially because it came from somewhere I never expected such a blow to come from.
Some disappointments have a particular kind of force.
Not because of what they do.
Because of who they come from.
And that feeling stayed stuck to me.
I went to bed, and it was still there.
I tried to push it away.
It came back.
I tried to think about something else.
It came back.
I tried to convince myself that it shouldn't matter to me.
And, naturally, the more I tried not to think about it, the more determined it seemed to be to sit in the front row of my mind.
What a nuisance.
It stole hours of sleep from me.
At one point I seriously thought I might not sleep at all that night.
And I almost gave up.
But sleep came in the end.
And thank goodness it did.
Because when I woke up, I was myself again.
Still a little wobbly, yes.
I won't lie to you.
My inner heroine had survived, but someone had moved her sword.
It was leaning a little to one side.
So I got up as best I could, climbed out from beneath the blankets โ that wonderful kingdom no one should ever have to leave at five in the morning โ and walked over to the window.
And there she was.
The moon.
Waiting for me.
So luminous.
So peaceful.
So completely removed from my tiny human dramas.
And I thought:
Ah.
So you're my teacher today.
All right.
I'm listening.
Then I did something that helped me tremendously.
I sat down.
And instead of continuing to try to chase that unpleasant feeling away, I decided to take it all the way to the extreme.
I imagined it again.
But worse.
Much worse.
I let my mind build the most terrible, exaggerated, dramatic version of everything that had happened that it possibly could.
I carried it to the point where it almost seemed like a tragedy written by an author with far too much imagination and absolutely no sense of moderation.
And I cried.
A lot.
The tears came pouring out with such determination that they seemed to be saying:
โAt last! We've been waiting hours for our turn!โ
So I let them come.
I didn't try to stop them.
Then I stopped.
Breathed.
And went all the way to the opposite extreme.
Completely the opposite.
I imagined that everything had happened in the most beautiful way possible.
Everything I would have loved.
Everything I would have wanted to receive.
Everything that would have made the whole situation wonderful.
And I exaggerated that too.
Oh, yes.
All the way to the flowers.
All the way to the fairy tales.
All the way to those endings where everyone hugs everyone else, someone plays a violin somewhere in the distance, and a mysterious voice announces that everyone lived happily ever after.
I stopped again.
And went back to the other side.
Again.
I did it once more.
And again.
And again.
Until something very strange happened.
The dark extreme began to lose its power.
But the bright extreme did too.
The sadness could no longer drag me along behind it.
And the fantasy could no longer make me fly the way it had before.
It was as though I had been carrying both feelings from one end of the garden to the other until, finally, I sat down in the middle of the grass and thought:
All right.
Enough.
And something appeared there.
It wasn't overwhelming happiness.
And it wasn't sadness.
It was a kind of peace so simple that I almost laughed at myself for having searched for such a complicated solution.
I stayed still.
Breathing.
And for the first time since yesterday, I felt that I didn't need to fix anything.
I didn't need to win.
I didn't need to prove anything.
I didn't need to convince anyone.
I didn't need to figure out what someone else wanted to do with me.
I could simply be.
And that brought me back to the moon.
Because that was exactly what she was doing.
Being.
Nothing more.
And nothing less.
The clouds kept passing.
She remained there.
The sky changed.
She remained there.
The night moved forward.
She remained there.
And when the day came and I could no longer see her, she would still be there, even though my eyes could no longer find her.
What a powerful way to exist.
To never have to fight with the sky just to prove that you belong to it.
And then I asked myself:
What if I could live like that too?
That doesn't mean that nothing will hurt me.
It doesn't mean that I will never feel jealousy, fear, sadness, anger, or insecurity again.
I'm human.
Of course I will feel things.
And I will probably feel far too many of them.
That isn't exactly breaking news.
But feeling something doesn't mean giving it the keys to my house.
And I think that was my lesson.
I can feel a shadow without becoming a shadow.
I can find a cloud in front of me without deciding that the sky has disappeared.
I can see someone shining without putting out my own light.
And above all, I can stop running a race I never chose to enter in the first place.
How liberating.
Because the moon doesn't look at the stars and think:
โI have to shine brighter than they do.โ
She doesn't look at the sun and think:
โOh no. When he appears, I lose.โ
And she doesn't look at the clouds and think:
โWhy are they taking up so much space?โ
Everyone has their moment.
Their place.
Their nature.
Their beauty.
And that ought to be enough for us far more often than it is.
Perhaps that is why seeing her did me so much good.
She reminded me that my place does not become smaller because someone else occupies space.
My light does not lose its value because someone else has light.
And if someone wants to do something similar to what I do...
let them.
If someone wants to be better...
let them be.
And if someone wants to compete...
let them compete with themselves.
I have far too many things I want to live for to spend my life watching who is trying to catch up with me.
I want to look ahead.
I want to do my things.
I want to learn.
I want to create.
I want to love.
I want to make mistakes.
I want to get back up with my sword still slightly crooked.
And I want to remain myself.
Not a version of me designed to please everyone.
Me.
The real me.
The one who cries sometimes.
The one who exaggerates sometimes.
The one who goes out onto the balcony at five in the morning to talk to the stars and somehow ends up having a philosophical conversation with the moon.
The one who can be sad one night and wake up the next morning with an entirely new idea.
The one who is still capable of wonder.
The one who still asks questions.
The one who can still get excited over a moon.
And perhaps that is one of the things I most want to keep.
My ability to be amazed.
Because this morning I could have stayed inside thinking about that shadow.
I could have let it take up all the space.
But I opened the window.
And I found the sky.
I found the moon.
And I found a part of myself that had been hiding behind a passing cloud.
What a strange little paradox.
The moon was up there, and I was down here.
She knew nothing about my night.
Nothing about my thoughts.
She didn't know that I had cried.
She didn't know I had almost deprived myself of sleep.
She knew absolutely nothing.
And yet...
she helped me.
Without doing anything.
Simply by being there.
Perhaps some gifts arrive that way.
Without explanation.
Without instructions.
Without knocking on the door.
They simply appear before us and wait for us to know how to look at them.
And I looked.
And I am so very glad I did.
Because now I know something I didn't know yesterday:
I don't have to clear the entire sky in order to shine.
I don't have to make the clouds disappear.
I don't have to convince anyone that I have a place.
I don't have to be a full moon every day.
There are phases.
There are changes.
There are nights when you feel enormous.
And other nights when you can barely find a tiny piece of yourself.
All of that is part of being alive too.
And this morning, while the moon was still up there and the sky was slowly beginning to change, I felt an enormous gratitude.
For the difficult night.
Yes.
Even for that.
Because it forced me to look at something I needed to see.
For the moon.
For the clouds.
For the sleep that finally came.
For my tears.
For my laughter.
For that crooked sword which, even though it wasn't perfectly straight, was still raised.
And above all, for still being here.
Alive.
Breathing.
Thinking.
Feeling.
Learning.
What a strange and wonderful privilege.
So thank you, Allah.
Thank you for waking me just when the moon was looking toward my window.
Thank you for giving me a teacher who didn't need to utter a single word.
Thank you for reminding me that someone else's light never has to become a threat to my own.
Thank you for teaching me to guard my words.
Thank you for the peace that came after all that inner turmoil.
Thank you for another day of August.
August has started packing its bags too.
It seems July told it the secret, and now they both want to leave without making too much of a goodbye.
But that's all right.
Let them go.
Other months will come.
Other dawns.
Other moons.
Other letters.
And perhaps, with a little luck, other versions of myself whom I haven't met yet.
For now, I'll keep this version of me:
a slightly calmer Mithea,
with eyes still full of moonlight,
a much lighter heart,
and a slightly crooked sword that intends to be raised again tomorrow.
Because, my dear life...
if the moon can remain the moon beneath the clouds,
then I can remain myself too.
And that, for an ordinary morning,
seems to me like a rather extraordinary lesson.
Thank you.
Thank you.
And endless thanks.
Until the next letter, my sweet life. Inshallah.
From my heart,
Mithea D.

La luna no compite con nadie
Buenos dรญas, queridรญsima vida.
Buenos dรญas, mi mรกs fiel y sincera amiga.
Otra vez.
Sรญ.
y allรญ estaba la luna.
ยกAh!
Se acabรณ la visita a las estrellas.
Lo siento muchรญsimo, pequeรฑas mรญas, pero aquella luna estaba haciendo una entrada triunfal de tal magnitud que era imposible ignorarla.
Estaba preciosa.
Sรญ.
Habรญa unas cuantas alrededor.
Grandes.
Gruesas.
Y aquello me encant
Me quedรฉ observando aquello y pensรฉ:
Mira t
Quรฉ manera tan curiosa de seguir brillando.
La luna no parecรญa estar haciendo ningรบn esfuerzo.
No estaba gritando:
ยป
Nada.
Las nubes hacรญan lo suyo.
Ni quiรฉn soรฑaba con tener su lugar.
Ni siquiera quiรฉn estuviera intentando dormir y pensara:
ยป
Ella no iba a bajar nada.
Seguirรญa allรญ.
Suspendida.
Plรกcida.
Esplรฉndida.
Como si tuviera asuntos muchรญsimo mรกs importantes que atender.
Nos importa muchรญsimo.
ยกQuรฉ mujer!
Habรญa visto a unas personas a las que me alegrรณ muchรญsimo encontrarme.
Al principio todo fue alegrรญa.
Conversaciรณn.
Tiempo compartido.
No.
Y quizรก incluso mejor.
Eso me golpe
Y aquella sensaciรณn se me quedรณ pegada.
Me fui a dormir y siguiรณ allรญ.
Intentรฉ apartarla.
Volvi
Intentรฉ pensar en otra cosa.
Volvi
No voy a mentirte.
Y allรญ estaba ella.
La luna.
Esperรกndome.
Tan luminosa.
Tan tranquila.
Y pens
Ah.
Asรญ que tรบ eres mi maestra hoy.
Perfecto.
Te escucho.
Y entonces hice algo que terminรณ ayudรกndome muchรญsimo.
Me sent
Y llor
Muchรญsimo.
ยซยกPor fin! ยกLlevamos horas esperando nuestro turno!ยป
Las dejรฉ salir.
No intentรฉ detenerlas.
Despuรฉs parรฉ.
Respir
Y me fui al extremo contrario.
Completamente contrario.
Volvรญ a parar.
Y regresรฉ al otro lado.
Otra vez.
Lo hice de nuevo.
Y otra vez.
Y otra.
Bueno.
Ya estรก.
Y allรญ apareciรณ algo.
Me quedรฉ quieta.
Respirando.
No necesitaba ganar.
No necesitaba demostrar.
No necesitaba convencer a nadie.
No necesitaba averiguar quรฉ querรญa hacer otra persona conmigo.
Podรญa simplemente estar.
Y aquello me llevรณ otra vez a la luna.
Estar.
Nada mรกs.
Y nada menos.
Las nubes seguรญan pasando.
Ella seguรญa allรญ.
El cielo cambiaba.
Ella seguรญa allรญ.
La noche avanzaba.
Ella seguรญa allรญ.
Y entonces me pregunt
ยฟY si yo tambiรฉn puedo vivir asรญ?
No significa que no me duela nada.
No significa que nunca vuelva a sentir celos, miedo, tristeza, enfado o inseguridad.
Soy humana.
Por supuesto que sentirรฉ cosas.
Probablemente sentirรฉ demasiadas.
ยป
Ni mira al sol y piensa:
ยซOh, no. Cuando รฉl aparece, yo pierdo.ยป
Ni mira las nubes y piensa:
ยซยฟPor quรฉ ellas estรกn ocupando tanto espacio?ยป
Mi luz no pierde valor porque alguien mรกs tenga luz.
Y si alguien quiere hacer algo parecido a m
que lo haga.
Si alguien quiere ser mejor
que lo sea.
Si alguien quiere competir
Quiero mirar hacia delante.
Quiero hacer mis cosas.
Quiero aprender.
Quiero crear.
Quiero querer.
Quiero equivocarme.
Quiero volver a levantarme con mi espada torcida.
Y quiero seguir siendo yo.
Quรฉ cosa tan curiosa.
La luna estaba ahรญ arriba y yo aquรญ abajo.
Ella no sabรญa nada de mi noche.
No sabรญa nada de mis pensamientos.
No sabรญa que yo habรญa llorado.
No sabรญa que habรญa estado a punto de no dormir.
No sabรญa absolutamente nada.
Y aun asรญโฆ
me ayudรณ.
No haciendo nada.
Simplemente estando allรญ.
Quizรก hay regalos que llegan asรญ.
Y yo mir
Y me alegro muchรญsimo de haberlo hecho.
Sรญ.
Viva.
Respirando.
Pensando.
Sintiendo.
Aprendiendo.
Quรฉ privilegio tan extraรฑo y maravilloso.
Asรญ que gracias, Allah.
Gracias por enseรฑarme a cuidar mis palabras.
yo tambiรฉn puedo seguir siendo yo.
Y eso, para una madrugada cualquiera,
me parece una enseรฑanza bastante extraordinaria.
Gracias.
Gracias.
E infinitas gracias.
Inshallah.
Desde mi corazรณn,
Mithea D.
