🍪🏔️🦢 The Wonderful Things That Can Fit into a Single Day

📜 September 1, 2026

A story of cookies, birds, a lake, a city barely glimpsed, and Alps that finally stopped being a photograph and became reality.

Good very early morning on this first day of September, my dearest and most wonderful life.

Here I am again, sitting in front of a new page for you, on this first September sunrise that has arrived almost on tiptoe, as though it did not want to wake summer too early before leaving.

And I have to tell you that this morning already feels different.

The air has grown just a little cooler, especially during the nights and these early hours when the world is still wrapped in sleep. So much so that this morning I did not even dare step out onto the balcony. And I love leaning out to see what secrets the night has left behind!

Besides, I have brought my winter duvet back out.

Well…

I brought it out, even though I only covered one shoulder with it.

But that does not matter.

A winter duvet is a winter duvet, and one must respect the official ceremonies marking the arrival of September. Hehe.

It is already getting light.

The sky is slowly beginning to brighten and, as I write, I can hear the voices of all the crows that live or work around here —because I do not know whether crows have official addresses, but these seem to have everything rather well organized—.

And, honestly, they sound like a perfectly organized protest.

What a racket!

Sometimes I think they must be protesting something very serious.

Perhaps because they have built yet another building around here.

Who knows.

Maybe crows have their own neighborhood association and I simply have not received my invitation yet.

And while I was listening to that enormous gathering of caws, I remembered the poor pigeons.

Ahhh, my sweet life…

In mid-July, we had to put a fairly large net across the balcony at home to stop the pigeons from continuing to come inside.

And I have to confess that, although I completely understand why it was necessary, my heart still aches a little whenever I see them trying to find a way back in.

Because, to them, that balcony was home.

Their little home.

Their refuge.

And suddenly, from one day to the next, they found themselves facing an invisible wall telling them:

“You cannot come in here anymore.”

Oh…

I really did not like seeing them lose that place.

But there were not many alternatives either, because we had already been warned several times that we needed to take measures and, if we did not, the ones who would eventually be left without a home would be us.

And, well…

One has to choose between the pigeons and one’s own roof.

Even if it is not exactly an exciting choice.

Besides, after that incredibly long winter, when summer finally arrived, oh, my sweet life!, you cannot imagine the mountains that were there.

Mountains.

Truly.

Mountains of pigeon droppings.

And, of course, I was the one who had to clean it all up.

I think I came close to throwing up about a thousand times.

Maybe fifteen hundred.

I was not keeping count because I was far too busy trying to survive.

And after that wonderful archaeological experience —because by then it looked like a historical excavation— I spent almost an entire month with irritated eyes.

So whenever I think about the pigeons, my heart says:

“Poor things…”

But my eyes say:

“NO!”

Hehe.

I do not know why I ended up talking to you about this this morning.

Ahhh, yes.

The crows!

I was talking about the crows, remembered the pigeons, and then remembered that the poor things are still trying every possible way to get back in.

Of course.

Now everything makes sense.

And come to think of it, perhaps that is why people used them as messengers in the old days.

They are unbelievably persistent!

You can take them far away and, somehow, they seem to say:

“Thanks for the ride. Now I am going home.”

And they do.

They always do.

Even if you put a net in front of them.

Even if you close a door.

Even if you change things around.

They keep trying.

And then, every morning, a huge hawk appears, looking as though it has officially taken on the job of air-traffic controller for this neighborhood.

It arrives.

Makes one round.

And suddenly…

Whoooooosh!

All the pigeons disappear.

And I am left staring at the whole thing with a mixture of amazement and fascination.

Because, is that not extraordinary?

All this little drama of nature happening right before my eyes while I am standing in a building right in the middle of the city.

Crows.

Pigeons.

A hawk.

Trees.

Sky.

Wind.

And who knows how many other creatures carrying on with their lives while we imagine that a city is nothing but buildings, cars, and people.

How beautiful nature is.

Sometimes it finds a way to remind us that it is still here.

🤎 A Sunday Among Mountains… and Far Too Many Cookies

Ahhh, my sweet life…

The day before yesterday, I went with my family to visit a cookie factory on the way to Lucerne.

And…

Ohhhhhhhhh!

What a wonderful place!

Because it was Sunday, the factory itself was closed, but the shop next to it was open.

And it seemed to be an extraordinarily popular place because there were so many people coming in, going out, tasting, and buying those delicious cookies.

And I think, my sweet life, that in my entire existence I had never eaten so many cookies in a single day.

There were aisles.

Entire aisles.

Shelf after shelf that seemed as though they would never end.

And the most dangerous —or wonderful, depending on how you look at it— thing was that beside every type of cookie there was a huge transparent glass container from which you could take as many as you wanted.

As many.

As you wanted.

My sweet life!

You do not need a particularly vivid imagination to guess how I behaved in that place.

Butter cookies.

Walnut cookies.

Hazelnut cookies.

Lemon cookies.

Chocolate cookies.

More chocolate.

And even more chocolate.

At one point I became slightly dizzy from so much chocolate-colored deliciousness and thought that perhaps I was slowly turning into a cookie.

So I immediately jumped over to the savory section.

And then…

Ahhhhh!

Oh, wow!

What wonderful little savory biscuits!

I was even fascinated by the beetroot ones, and beetroot does not exactly occupy one of the top spots on my list of favorite foods.

But those little beetroot hearts…

Ohhh.

I think they were among my favorite tastings of the day.

And then there were the olive ones.

The olive ones!

How delicious they were.

I think those were my number one.

Or were they?

Wait.

Maybe the rosemary ones were number one.

No, no.

The paprika ones!

Definitely the paprika ones.

Although…

No!

The potato ones!

Oh, my sweet life…

The cheese ones!

It is impossible!

I think they were all number one.

Because, really, my palate had decided to abolish the entire concept of ranking and declare everyone a winner.

And just when I thought I had finished with the savory section, my imagination dragged me back toward the sweet aisles.

There were the marzipan cookies.

And the Biscôme, with its sweet, intensely spiced, wonderfully aromatic flavor.

And that was when I realized that my heart had completely lost the ability to make rational decisions.

But I think, without a doubt, that the absolute queen of that outing was the classic and traditional Bretzeli.

The first one.

The authentic one.

The cookie that started the whole story.

Ohhh, what a delightful Sunday outing.

When I left, I was so full that I do not think I could have fit even one more crumb.

And, naturally, we took home a whole lot of boxes from our selection.

A carefully chosen selection.

Although also a rather confused one.

But there was something I liked even more than eating those cookies.

The story.

The story of that place.

There was a small darkened room where they had recreated the original kitchen in which everything began, and I found it fascinating.

I did not get to see it myself because I was far too busy eating cookies and it was almost closing time.

But my sister told me what it was like.

And I loved that story so much that, as soon as I got home, I went looking for it.

So come, my sweet life.

Come a little closer.

I want to tell you a story.

But you will have to imagine it with me.

Because some stories become much more beautiful when you look at them through the eyes of a child.

A long time ago, in 1906, a young man named Oscar Kambly arrived in a small Swiss village in the Emmental called Trubschachen.

And there is something I love about this story.

Oscar did not arrive there chasing a great fortune.

He did not arrive thinking about building a famous factory.

He did not arrive imagining boxes, shops, new recipes, or people tasting his cookies a hundred years later.

He arrived because of love.

Do you not think that places we reach because of love should always keep a little bit of magic?

I do.

I like to think so.

Trubschachen was then, as it is today, a little corner surrounded by mountains, meadows, and that deep green that seems to have a different shade when it belongs to Switzerland.

And there Oscar began to make something very simple:

Bretzeli.

Small, thin, crisp cookies, following an old family recipe from his grandmother.

I like to imagine that first kitchen.

Not a huge factory.

Not enormous machines.

Not mountains of boxes.

Just a simple kitchen.

A few utensils.

The aroma of freshly prepared dough.

And Oscar’s hands working with a recipe that had traveled from one generation to the next.

Perhaps he did not know that he was beginning a story.

Perhaps he was simply making cookies.

And I find that wonderful.

Because great stories almost never announce their arrival.

They do not walk through the door with a marching band saying:

“Attention! Something extraordinary begins here!”

No.

Sometimes they begin in silence.

With something small.

With something ordinary.

With someone who loves.

With a recipe.

With hands at work.

With an idea that does not yet know what it will become.

In 1910, that small activity officially became Kambly.

And over the years came new recipes, new generations, and new paths for those cookies.

What had begun in that little corner of the Emmental began traveling farther and farther away.

But there is something I find especially beautiful:

the beginning never left Trubschachen.

Today, inside the factory itself, there is a small corner dedicated precisely to that beginning.

They have recreated Oscar Kambly’s first bakery.

And when you enter, it does not feel as though you are simply looking at old objects.

The scene seems to awaken.

The utensils and elements of that kitchen come to life as light and sound tell the story.

And for a few moments, something extraordinary happens.

You can look at that little kitchen and almost imagine that Oscar is still there.

Making the Bretzeli.

Following his grandmother’s recipe.

Without knowing that, more than a hundred years later, someone would be standing in front of that very same scene, trying to imagine how it all began.

And I think that is the part I like most.

Because when you look at that kitchen, you understand that great stories do not always begin with great things.

Sometimes they begin with a person arriving somewhere new.

With a love that leads them there.

With a recipe kept in a family’s memory.

With a simple kitchen.

And with a few little cookies that, at that moment, were nothing more than that:

a few little cookies.

Perhaps Oscar never imagined how far they would go.

And perhaps that is precisely the most beautiful part.

That when a story is beginning, it almost never knows that it is a story yet.

Is that not fascinating, my sweet life?

🛶 Lucerne and the Lake That Seemed to Keep Secrets

After that completely immersive experience in the wonderful world of cookies, we headed toward Lucerne.

Ohhh, Lucerne.

Ohhhhhhhhh, Lucerne.

My sweet life…

I think that city has just officially become number one on my list of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Well…

There is also Istanbul.

Of course.

Of course, of course!

And Istanbul will always have a special place.

But Lucerne…

Oh, Lucerne.

And that lake.

The lake!

I do not think there are enough words.

When we arrived at Lake Lucerne, I stood looking at it as though I had just discovered a place that had been waiting for me for a very long time.

It stretched out before me, blue and luminous, surrounded by mountains that seemed to have gathered there expressly to guard its waters.

And I thought that perhaps lakes have a kind of magic of their own.

Maybe they keep secrets.

Maybe they remember things.

Maybe, when you look at them for long enough, they begin to tell stories without using words.

The sky was covered with fat little clouds.

There were so many of them that it looked as though someone had taken enormous handfuls of cotton and scattered them across the entire sky.

And I wanted to photograph everything.

Everything.

But then they appeared.

The ducks.

And the geese.

And the swans.

And…

their babies!

Oh, my sweet life.

Those little ones following their mothers across the water were so adorable that, naturally, I had to go closer.

I fed them.

Some accepted my offering with tremendous enthusiasm.

Others, however, decided to maintain a dignity that I found completely unnecessary.

They wanted absolutely nothing to do with my food.

Such proud creatures!

But they captivated me all the same.

I stayed beside the lake for quite a while, watching those bird families move peacefully across the water.

And I felt that, for once, there was no need to hurry.

Even though there were so many things to look at that my mind seemed to want to store them all at once.

And then I discovered a sculpture of Adam and Eve.

But Eve was the one who particularly caught my attention.

Because she was holding two apples in her hands.

Two.

I spent considerably longer thinking about that than necessary.

Although, probably, anyone with a reasonably unruly imagination would have done exactly the same thing.

Why two?

What was going on there?

I do not know.

But my imagination decided to make a note of it.

And then one of those little unexpected wonders happened that only occur when you are looking at a lake and think you have already seen everything.

I saw a woman in the middle of the water.

She was standing on a paddleboard.

And she had her dog with her.

Her dog!

The two of them moved along with such absolute calm that they looked as though they were simply taking a walk down an ordinary street.

She did not seem to be doing anything extraordinary.

She was simply there.

On the lake.

Out for a walk with her dog.

As though walking on water were the most normal thing in the world.

And I thought that perhaps Lucerne had different rules about what counts as normal.

Naturally, I took out my camera.

And I began taking photographs and videos like a madwoman.

Because I wanted to take everything with me.

The lake.

The ducks.

The geese.

The swans.

Their little ones.

The woman on the board with her dog.

Eve’s two apples.

The clouds.

The light.

The mountains.

Everything.

As though, by taking enough photographs, I could keep that place inside my phone and take it with me when we had to leave.

And then I saw them.

The Alps.

Ohhhhh…

The Swiss Alps surrounding the Four Cantons.

At last.

I had seen them so many times in photographs that it almost seemed impossible that they could really exist.

But there they were.

Enormous.

Majestic.

Surrounding the lake.

I stood looking at them.

And I thought:

So these are the Alps.

Not the ones in a photograph.

Not the ones in a book.

Not the ones on a screen.

The real ones.

And I think that was when I understood that no photograph would ever be able to preserve exactly what I was seeing.

But I took a great many anyway.

Because you never know when you might need to return to a place through an image.

🚗 Lucerne Through the Car Window

After that, we had to leave.

It was already late and the sun was beginning to descend, so we got into the car and set off.

And then Lucerne appeared.

We did not have time to get to know it the way I would have liked.

We could barely see a little of it from the car, especially through the center, while the afternoon light was slowly beginning to change everything.

But perhaps that was precisely why I found it even more fascinating.

The city appeared and disappeared before my eyes as we moved along.

I saw the old houses of the historic center, many of them decorated with painted façades, frescoes, and drawings that seemed to tell stories of their own.

Some squares were surrounded by buildings so old and ornate that they made me want to stop the car, get out, and ask them how many people they had watched pass by their windows.

Lucerne has that strange charm of cities that seem to belong to two eras at once.

On one side are its medieval streets, old buildings, historic squares, and decorated houses.

And on the other, modern life continues moving among them as though all of it were the most ordinary thing in the world.

Then the Kapellbrücke appeared, the famous covered wooden bridge, beside its Water Tower.

And, my sweet life…

It is one of those places that seem impossible.

Wood.

Water.

An ancient tower.

Paintings beneath the roof.

All together.

It looks as though it has stepped straight out of a fairy tale.

The bridge, which dates back to the fourteenth century, is one of Lucerne’s great symbols.

And I barely had time to look at it.

That was the worst part!

Because I wanted to stop.

I wanted to get out.

I wanted to walk across the bridge.

Look at the paintings.

Discover the squares.

Enter the little streets.

Look up.

Observe every façade.

And mentally ask all those houses what stories they had watched unfold.

But the car kept moving.

And Lucerne was beginning to fall behind.

I also caught sight of the Jesuit Church, beside the Reuss, with its Baroque architecture and those domes that can be recognized from afar.

Everything was passing far too quickly.

A façade.

A tower.

A square.

The river.

A bridge.

Another painted house.

And I was trying to look one way and then the other, as though suddenly I needed eyes much, much larger to take everything in.

It was already sunset.

The light was becoming soft and golden.

The clouds that had seemed white before were beginning to blush.

And Lucerne was moving away.

I kept looking through the window.

I thought it had been a little unfair to meet it like this.

So quickly.

But perhaps there was something beautiful in that hurried farewell too.

The city slowly disappeared while the sky filled with that golden light of the end of the day.

And behind it were still the lake and the Alps.

And I thought that, even though I had only seen Lucerne for a little while from the window of a car, I already had enough images in my mind to fill a little album of dreams.

So I took out my camera again.

One last photograph.

And another.

And another.

Ohhh…

The Alps surrounding the Four Cantons.

At last I had seen them.

And as Lucerne grew smaller and smaller behind us, I thought that perhaps one day I would have to return.

But next time, I told myself, I would not look at it from a car.

I would walk it.

All of it.

Slowly.

The way cities that awaken the imagination ought to be discovered.

I think I have gone on too long again, my dearest life.

But you know me.

You give me a lake, some mountains, some cookies, some pigeons, a hawk, a beautiful city, and a love story from 1906…

And you expect me to stay quiet?

So, for now, I shall say goodbye.

Until the next adventure.

Until the next dream.

Until the next story that comes knocking at my door.

Thank you, Allah, for the incredible Sunday You have given me.

Thank You for that beautiful inspiration born from the story of a little world of cookies.

Thank You for the beauty of the Alps.

Thank You for that immense and mysterious lake.

Thank You for landscapes that seem to have been invented.

Thank You for the swans, the ducks, the geese, and their little ones.

Thank You even for the pigeons, although I still owe them a little apology for having closed their old door.

Thank You for allowing me to make it there.

Thank You for allowing me to look.

Thank You for allowing me to create.

Thank You for allowing me to marvel.

Thank You for all those little moments that seem insignificant when they happen and yet, one day, become memories that we keep with so much love.

Thank You.

Endless thanks.

Thank You, thank You.

Until the next letter. Inshallah. 🌷

Además, he vuelto a sacar mi edredón de invierno.

Bueno…

Ay…

“Pobrecitas…”

Pero mis ojos dicen:

“¡NO!”

Jeje.

Ahora vuelvo a casa.”

Y vuelven.

Siempre vuelven.

¿O no?

Espera.

No, no.

¡Las de páprika!

Definitivamente las de páprika.

Aunque…

¡No!

Me gusta imaginar aquella primera cocina.

No una enorme fábrica.

No máquinas gigantescas.

No montañas de cajas.

Solo una cocina sencilla.

Algunos utensilios.

No.

Tal vez guardan secretos.

Tal vez recuerdan cosas.

Ella no parecía estar haciendo nada extraordinario.

Enormes.

Majestuosos.

Rodeando el lago.

Me quedé mirándolos.

Y preguntarles mentalmente a todas aquellas casas qué historias habían visto pasar.

Pero el coche seguía avanzando.

Y Lucerna comenzaba a quedarse atrás.

Creo que nuevamente me he extendido, queridísima vida.

Biscôme

.Bretzeli
